Just these minutes, Andy Murray and his brother Jamie are playing the 1st round of doubles at Wimbledon against the Australians Rinky Hijikata and John Peers and, watching the match that is being played on Centre Court, there is Roger Federer, the man who holds the record for titles in the men's singles, at the Championships.
Roger, elegant and super classy as always, was filmed while walking through the corridors of Centre Court, while greeting Caroline Wozniacki to watch the British champion's match.
Murray made some statements to the BBC that explained how his decision to not play the Wimbledon men's singles tournament came about. The Scotsman was supposed to play his first round against the Czech Tomas Machac but, a few hours before the match, he opted for retirement. Andy has not recovered from yet another injury that forced him to withdraw a few weeks ago at the Queen's Club Championships.
"I'm disappointed. I wanted to play in the tournament. I wanted to have the chance to step onto Center Court and give it another try. But I would only do that if I felt like I could compete and I didn't. I wanted that moment, for myself and for the people who have supported me over the years, the fans but also my closest friends, family, my team, it was important for me to do the same for them. But nothing, the timing wasn't the best, the surgery was complex. It just wasn't supposed to be. I slept on it, then I told my team and my family that I didn't think I was going to play. The decision was based on how I felt going into the match. I actually trained and was playing pretty well but I just wasn't happy with how my leg was. I wanted to sleep on it and make sure I was happy with the decision, and also give myself a chance, when I woke up, to see if I felt better. I ran home a little bit in the morning when I got up but I didn't feel the way I wanted. I worked really hard to give myself the chance to play and yeah, it was the right decision," he said.
Meanwhile, on the podcast What now? with Trevor Noah, Federer had some beautiful words for Murray and his other two great rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal: "Hopefully Novak Djokovic can continue to break all the records. Hopefully Andy Murray can play as much as his hip allows him and that he still has that hunger. Rafael Nadal knew he was in a difficult situation too and hopes he can continue to win as much as possible."
