As usual, Rory McIlroy didnt shirk his responsibilities and faced the press to reflect on the way he played the final holes of the BMW PGA Championship. "You know, last week was tough, but I came away with my head held high.

That showed in the way I played the 72nd hole trying to make eagle, and then I played the playoff holes perfectly, really, with two birdies. But it just shows the level of the tournament. If you make a little mistake or dont make birdie on a crucial hole, theres always someone waiting to take advantage.

I had my chance in regulation but I ended up with a really difficult distance on my second shot. I tried to curl a 4-iron to the right. I overspinned it and I was lucky it didnt end up in the water. Two weeks in a row, I feel like Ive played well.

But not well enough. Overall, Im happy with my game and where its going. Ive got a week off now before I go to the Dunhill Links Championship in two weeks.

Rory McIlroy, statements

"I think the 5-wood was too much and I didnt want to end up behind the green on that hole, so I went for a 4-iron.

I was aiming for the right bunker trying to get it back to the middle of the green. I just overspinned it and it stopped on the edge of the hazard, I did well. I could have also hit a layup and a wedge like Billy did. But when you're only 225 yards from the front of the green, you think you have to give it a go.

Then I played the two playoff holes really well, especially the 4 iron I put on the green on the second playoff hole. It was perfect. I made a good putt that just missed the target on the right and Billy made his. That's what made the difference".
