After accomplishing his goal of competing at this year's French Open and Paris Olympics, the former world No. 1 withdrew from the US Open and Laver Cup, which was an instant indication that he was ready to walk away from pro tennis.

And after Nadal signed up to represent Spain at the Davis Cup Finals between November 19-24 in Malaga, the general expectation was that the 37-year-old wanted to complete a cycle of representing his nation this year.

In this life, everything has a beginning and an end. And I think its the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined. I feel super lucky for all the things Ive been able to experience. I want to thank the entire tennis industry, all the people involved in this sport, my longtime colleagues, especially my great rivals. Ive spent many, many hours with them, and Ive lived many moments that Ill remember for the rest of my life," the record 14-time French Open champion announced.

Nadal to fans: I leave with the absolute peace of mind...

Since laying out his plans in 2023 May to retire after the 2024 season, there had been a lot of talk about whether the Spanish tennis icon would change his mind and play beyond this season. But since this year was also marked with injuries and challenges, it was clear that the chances of seeing that happen were slim to none.

Everything I have experienced has been a dream come true. I leave with the absolute peace of mind of having given my best, of having made an effort in every way I can only end by saying, 1000. Thanks to all and see you soon," Nadal added.

Nadal has one of the richest resumes in all of sports and he will go down as one of the greatest tennis players but also as one of the biggest ambassadors in the game's history.
