Gasquet announced his decision in an interview with L'Equipe, during which he explained: "I think it's the best time to do it. It's the best tournament to do it, we are lucky to be French to be able to stop in such incredible places. I will be almost 39 years old: I never imagined I would play so much starting so young. Saying stop is always complicated, all the former great players have often told me, it's not easy to announce it. You never know when, how, where. I think this is the best time for me to do it."

Gasquet then added: "Tennis is not just about big matches, it's visceral. When I won the Cassis Challenger a few weeks ago I became one of the three youngest and one of the three oldest to have won a Challenger title. That sums me up well."

The Frenchman has won 16 ATP tournaments in his career, including the last in Auckland in January 2023. In 2007 he reached his best ATP ranking, at number 7. He has reached three semifinals in Grand Slam tournaments: twice at Wimbledon and once at the US Open. For him, L'Equipe hypothesizes, a future in tennis within the French Federation.
