Konosuke Takeshita was touted as a breakout star in AEW when he debuted a few years ago and he has shown a lot of promise since then as the company clearly had big plans for him. That promise was ultimately rewarded as he became the AEW International Champion this week and it appears AEW had been planning this title win for a long time.

At the AEW WrestleDream pay-per-view, Will Ospreay defended his AEW International Championship in a triple threat match against Konosuke Takeshita and Ricochet, which many felt had the potential of being a match of the year contender.

In the final moments, Ospreay hit Takeshita with a Hidden Blade, but Don Callis pulled the referee out of the ring to stop the count. Callis then entered the ring with a screwdriver, but Ospreay tried to stop him. Kyle Fletcher suddenly attacked Ospreay, siding with Callis. Takeshita used the opportunity to hit Ospreay with a knee to the face. The referee returned to the ring and counted the pin, thus making Takeshita the new AEW International Champion as a result of a controversial finish.

According to Fightful Select, Konosuke Takeshitas AEW International Championship win at WrestleDream had been planned for several weeks. This victory is a special one as it marks Takeshitas first title win in AEW.
