David Beckham has revealed a funny backstory behind his interest in fashion, admitting that he always enjoyed "dressing different".

When fashion and football appear together in a conversation, it's likely Beckham's name will follow. The Manchester United legend is recognised globally for his influence in the fashion industry - breaking boundaries since the start of his football career to propel his name onto the worldwide stage.

Risque haircuts, modelling shoots and red carpet appearances, Beckham crafted a new generation of footballers who had the platform to explore other interests away from the pitch.

But where did the Inter Miami co-owner's style stem from?

"I always liked fashion," he told former teammate and fellow Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel. "Even when I was a page boy for my mum's best friend when I was a kid.

"I was given the opportunity as a kid when I was 12 or 11 years old and I was page boy for one of my mum's friends - she gave me the opportunity to either wear a suit or knickerbockers.Knickerbockers with white silk socks and a pair of ballet shoes and I wore that. There was always something in me that liked dressing different."

When asked to name the players that he think carry the most influence in the football fashion industry now, Beckham admitted that basketball players were at the forefront of his mind in that regard.

"They [NBA stars] do the runway almost on the way to the games, don't they?," Ferdinand responded. "Barcelona have stopped doing that now."

"Funnily enough," continued the former midfielder. "Our team [Inter Miami] started doing that a couple of times and I put a stop to it."

Throwing his hands in the air in disbelief, 'What?" Ferdinand quizzed. "The man about fashion, the man who broke down all the boundaries."

Beckham was quick to interject: "Yeah, but we weren't winning games at that point."

"That's what I'm like," Ferdinand agreed. "If I'm an owner I don't want to see you on social media if we're seventh or eighth, I don't want to see you coming in, in different outfits everyday.

"I can't believe Mr Fashion said there's no fashion at my football club, that's nuts."
