Two familiar foes meet on the sideline in Paris on Wednesday night as Luis Enrique's PSG take on Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

These two sides were poised to meet in last season's semi-final before Atletico succumbed at Signal Iduna Park in the second leg of their quarter-final tie with Borussia Dortmund, who then went on to beat Enrique's side in both legs of the semi-final to advance to the competition's showpiece event at Wembley.

Neither team has made a particularly great start to the 2024/25 league phase, with Atleti entering the contest off the back of defeats to Benfica and Lille. PSG, meanwhile, haven't won since Matchday 1 - when they narrowly edged past Girona. The Ligue 1 leaders have been cast aside by Arsenal and held by PSV Eindhoven.

However, the perennial French champions are asserting themselves domestically having recently secured huge wins over Marseille and Lens to extend their lead at the summit. Atletico are third in La Liga having downed a resurgent Las Palmas 2-0 on Sunday.

Here is 90min's guide to PSG's Champions League bout with Atleti.

Gianluigi Donnarumma has fallen out of favour and was dropped for PSG's victory against Lens at the weekend. Matvei Safonov recorded a clean sheet on Saturday and could retain his place between the sticks here.

Enrique will likely use Marco Asensio in a central position up top with Goncalo Ramos still out. The Spaniard will be flanked by flying Frenchmen Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele - the pair combined to devastating effect in Saturday's domestic win.

Presnel Kimpembe and Lucas Hernandez remain out for the hosts.

Pablo Barrios recovered from a muscle injury and featured during Atletico's 2-0 win over Las Palmas at the weekend. The young midfielder started alongside veteran Koke in the middle of the park and could keep his place in the team on Wednesday.

The visitors are still without Cesar Azpilicueta, Robin Le Normand, and do-it-all midfielder Marcos Llorente, while Thomas Lemar is now not likely to return until after the international break.

Alexander Sorloth will hope his strike at the weekend earns him a spot alongside Antoine Griezmann in Wednesday's XI, but Julian Alvarez and Angel Correa are also pushing for starts.

PSG vs Atletico Madrid score prediction

Enrique's young guns have so far struggled somewhat on this stage, and they could be outfoxed by Simeone's wily visitors here.

We've got to expect the hosts to enjoy much of the game, but Atletico do boast the firepower and finesse to hurt PSG in transition. It's bound to be a chess match between the two managers.

Experience matters on occasions like this, but Atletico's away form is a concern. They were thumped by Benfica in Lisbon on Matchday 2 and have won just two of their six La Liga away games this season. However, you should never bet against Simeone's Atleti when the chips are down.

Expect the visitors to battle and graft for a useful point in Paris.

Prediction: PSG 1-1 Atletico Madrid
