Carlos Alcaraz didn't hide that he was determined to lead Spain to a big comeback against Netherlands and prolong Rafael Nadal's farewell but ultimately fell short in his bid.

After Botic van de Zandschulp beat the 38-year-old 6-4 6-4, the current top-ranked Spanish male tennis player was in a must win situation. However, the world No. 3 remained unfazed and ousted Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (0) 6-3 to send the tie into a deciding match.

Later, Alcaraz dedicated the win to his idol Nadal.

"I watched the whole match, I had the chance to watch the first set here live. Once you step on the court you try to show your best tennis. It's the Davis Cup, a really important tournament for me and everyone. I tried to play my best tennis to give Spain the best chance to qualify and win today -- I did it for Rafa," the reigning Wimbledon champion said after beating Griekspoor.

Alcaraz lost in the key match but had a beautiful statement on Nadal's greatness

In the deciding doubles match, the 22-year-old returned to the court and teamed up with Marcel Granollers. Sadly for the four-time Grand Slam winner, he and the Spanish doubles veteran didn't manage to deliver as van de Zandschulp and Wesley Koolhof claimed a 7-6 (4) 7-6 (3) win.

Throughout his career, Nadal regularly represented his nation and won four Davis Cup titles.

There will be many more Davises, there is only one Rafa," Alcaraz noted.

That wasn't all as the world No. 3 had more major words about the 38-year-old's greatness.

I think that he was one of the best ambassadors for tennis. His legacy is going to be eternal. You know, he has been great for tennis, for this sport in general," the 22-year-old added.

Now that Nadal is retired, Alcaraz is officially the main face of Spanish tennis.
