The pro wrestling business might be about entertainment, but it is still a business. Intellectual property is a huge part of the game, and that means WWE and AEW may find themselves trying to lay claim to the same thing at times, especially when a Superstar jumps ship to Tony Khans company.
Christian Cage has been a heat-seeking magnet since debuting for AEW at AEW Revolution 2021. He has broken off as one of the top heels for the company, even holding a guaranteed AEW World Title shot as he proclaims himself as the next champion for the company. That being said, AEW doesnt have all the freedom to promote him as they wish.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that Christian tried to trademark the term Captain Charisma and was opposed by WWE. This nickname is one that WWE wont let AEW use at this point, because they have laid claim to it a long time ago.
Although Christian Cage can use that name outside WWE, because they never used his last name, his nickname is not up for grabs. WWE reportedly made that very clear with this roadblock.
While Adam Copeland was allowed to use his Rated R Superstar name, Christian Cage isnt so lucky with his old WWE nickname. WWE didnt have an active trademark for Edges old persona, but they were able to put a stop to Captain Charisma. On a sidenote, WWE did recently apply for a new trademark on the name Edge.
We will have to see if Christian ever gets the green light to go as Captain Charisma again. At this point, it appears that he will have to settle with his Patriarchy nickname for now, which he is still using to generate a ton of heat for himself.
