Juan Guerrero-Burgos was elected this Tuesday as the new president of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), a position he will occupy for the next four years, replacing Gonzaga Escauriaza, who had held the position since 2008 and who, in turn, has been named honorary president.
Spain, statement
Although we are growing at an appreciable rate, if at one time we had almost 340,000 members, I would like us to gradually get closer to that figure. To do this, we must promote golf, especially to people outside our environment, who will get hooked if they know about it, Guerrero-Burgos said in statements released by the federation body.
Guerrero-Burgos was the only person who had presented his candidacy within the established deadline for this, so a vote by the assembly members was not necessary.
The twelfth president, who was full of praise when talking about his predecessor Escauriaza, said that the key is to promote the construction of initiation facilities and stressed that the National Golf Centre is everyone's home.
The National Golf Centre is everyone's home and it will continue to be that way. It will be a place where all its facilities will be used and optimised to the maximum so that it acts as a loudspeaker for Spanish golf activities before the whole of society, he said.
We must focus on the digitalisation of the federation, on improving its processes. We face the same challenges as any institution in an area in which progress is so rapid and continuous that it catches almost all of us off guard, he added.
We must continue to support the Open de Espaa. For ourselves, and I am referring to the whole of Spanish golf, but also for Jon Rahm. We owe it to him, he is our standard-bearer, he has always given us a lot and we have to thank him in this way, continued the new leader, who stressed the importance of being sensitive to the issue of inclusion and breaking the clichs because golf is a sport that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.
