Liv, history
In 2021, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund Director Yasir Al-Rumayyan appointed former Australian golfer Greg Norman as CEO of a new men's professional golf tour, called LIV Golf, with the aim of establishing a sort of "Super League" and poaching many players from the world's top 100 and the PGA Tour. This tour has the support of Donald Trump, encouraging PGA Tour players to join it, and hosts LIV Golf five times within its properties on American territory in the first two years (Bedminster, Washington and Miami).
The first edition takes place from June to October 2022 around eight tournaments held in England, the United States, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. The format is different from the PGA Tour, with three days of competition for a 54-hole shotgun. Each competition provides a prize pool of $20 million for individuals and $5 million for teams, exceeding the prize pools of all other PGA Tour tournaments. Criticized by the press, it nevertheless attracts many prestigious players and Grand Slam winners such as Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau, Branden Grace, Henrik Stenson, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Martin Kaymer, Ian Poulter, Louis Oosthuizen and Brooks Koepka, for large participation bonuses in millions of dollars. They are enhanced by two huge stars of the discipline with Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. On the other hand, Tiger Woods refuses the poaching despite an offer of more than $800 million. 2023: Second edition
The second edition takes place from February to October 2023 around fourteen tournaments taking place in England, the United States, Saudi Arabia as in 2022, with the addition of Mexico, Australia, Singapore and Spain. The prize money remains at $20 million individually and $5 million in teams. New players join the circuit.
