John McEnroe has raised a criticism of the tennis system, proposing a solution, regarding the doping issues that involved Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner last year.
The former American champion argued that the reputation of tennis has not been tarnished by the cases of the Polish and the Italian, highlighting how instead a figure that protects the players is necessary.
In short, doping is always at the center of the tennis debate. The start of the 2025 Australian Open is very close, the first Slam of the year in which both Jannik and Iga will make their debut, among the main candidates for the final success.
However, the debates of public opinion continue to focus on the cases of positive doping of the two tennis superstars, protagonists of two controversial cases.
"The recent doping controversies have not damaged the reputation of tennis, but having a single commissioner would help clear up the confusion surrounding doping cases. I don't think it has done any harm because, if you look at it, in other sports it is much worse. In my opinion, tennis is cleaner than any other sport, although that doesn't mean there are no problems," said McEnroe.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion then attacked the tennis system, analyzing with great honesty: "We need a tennis commissioner who goes out there and speaks for the players to defend them or not defend them. The point is we don't have anyone to speak for them. It seems like it will never happen because people are too busy, these tournaments protect their interests. They care about themselves, they don't care enough about the sport."
We recall Iga has already served the month of disqualification between the end of September and the beginning of October 2024. Jannik - who failed two doping tests at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, was initially acquitted by the independent tribunal ITIA. Subsequently, the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA appealed this ruling to the CAS, asking for a 1-2 year ban for the Italian. Sinner will only know his fate between the end of February and the beginning of March.
