Aryna Sabalenka began the defense of her title by beating Sloane Stephens in straight sets, qualifying for the 2nd round of the Australian Open 2025.
The Belarusian clearly beat the American 6-3 6-2, extending her streak of successes, after the title won at the beginning of the year at the Brisbane International, sending a clear message to all the opponents who will try to snatch the title from her here in Melbourne.
At the press conference, the WTA No.1 expressed her feelings after the first match at Melbourne Park. The Belarusian champion reflected on her growth in recent years, which has made her, today, a totally mature tennis player.
"There is a big difference if I compare myself to myself three years ago. Back then I was frustrated and probably lost the first set. I'm not sure I would have won the match. I'm very happy that I've improved my mental toughness. I'm able to stay focused regardless of the score and the situation. I focus on the game, on the rally, point by point," she analyzed.
Sabalenka then talked about the novelty of this season, the possibility of coaches sitting on the sidelines during the match, explaining: "Honestly, I'm not a big fan of this decision. If you do it, then put more seats. For example, I personally like to see the whole team. I want to see all the people in my box. Even if I don't look at everyone. I always look at my coach, but I see everyone. For me it's important. Sometimes I just want to look at my boyfriend for support, for example. Four seats are not enough, because I have a lot of coaches."
The Belarusian tennis player then concluded by telling what was the biggest lesson of her 2024.
"The biggest lesson I learned last year is that you shouldn't focus on defending your title or writing your name in tennis history. The key is to focus on yourself and do your best," she explained.
