Naomi Osaka said the fire wasn't too far away from her Los Angeles house and revealed that she had someone go to her place and take her daughter's birth certificate because that was one precious thing she didn't want to risk losing.

On Monday, the two-time Australian Open champion kicked off her run at Melbourne Park with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 win over Caroline Garcia.
After completing her revenge against the Frenchwoman - who beat her in Melbourne last year - the Japanese was asked about the fires that have been ravaging the Los Angeles area.
So far, more than 12,000 structures have been destroyed.
And while competing at the Happy Slam, Osaka is thinking about what is happening back in California.
Osaka: The fire is three blocks from my house
"I was watching the fire map and the fire is three blocks from my house," the Japanese tennis star said.
"So, I had someone go and get my daughter's birth certificate because I didn't know what would happen if that burned down. Sending all my love to LA.

"It is really difficult for me because I think it's tougher because I find now my home is more of a home because I have memories with my daughter.
"There's so many things, keepsakes and stuff like that. Obviously you can't hoard them all when you're asking them to go to your house and just grab stuff."
In 2023 July, Osaka welcomed her first child, a baby girl Shai.
For the 27-year-old, beating Garcia also meant her first Australian Open win as a mom.
Since launching her post-pregnancy comeback, the Japanese underlined numerous times that she wants to win Slams for her daughter and make her proud.

For a place in the Australian Open third round, Osaka will battle against Karolina Muchova, against whom she has one win and two defeats.
