Matteo Berrettini failed to reach the third round at the Australian Open 2025, stopped by Holger Rune.
The Dane, despite some ups and downs, managed to emerge in the most important moments of the match, undermining the fundamental shots of his rival, insinuating himself into his mind and destabilizing him especially on the Italian's first serve.
For Matteo, the regret for not having taken advantage of all the opportunities he deservedly earned during the match, but the awareness that the path to returning to experience certain emotions on the Tour is the right one.
Two moments that made the difference in a negative way. The first occurred in the first sets, when he didn't close out his serve, wasting two set points and then lost the tie-break 3-7. The second, however, saw Rune save two more set points in the fourth set and then come back from 2-5 in the other crucial tie-break.
A difficult chance to forget for the Italian, who at the end of the match analyzed the challenge and his performance, admitting that he was not strong enough to beat Rune.
"In the end I wasn't strong enough to win the match. This is how I sum it up. There's a lot of regret, because I had worked well and felt good. I was coming off a good win and I had started off great. I wasn't able to take advantage of the opportunities I created.
There was perhaps a slightly passive approach in some points, which doesn't pay off in the long run, especially with my game. His readiness to take advantage of the opportunities made the difference. There are some positive things: physically I feel very good and I was ready to play another set. In my opinion there have also been improvements on a technical level.
The referee's decisions have been few and not very influential. It's important to always try to grow. I know it's part of the journey: matches are won and lost, it's not the end of the world. I'm working hard. Today I lost unfortunately, but I'm confident that this season will bring me good things," he explained in Italian.
