Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag could be appointed by Borussia Dortmund this week if the Bundesliga outfit lose their Champions League tie with Bologna on Tuesday night, according to a report in Germany.
Last season's beaten Champions League finalists have struggled for consistency since Nuri Sahin took charge over the summer and results have plummeted in recent weeks. The club won just one of their final five fixtures before the winter break and have started 2025 with three straight defeats.
Slumped in the bottom half of the Bundesliga table with more than half the campaign gone, Dortmund are still well placed to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.
The outfit from the Ruhr region take on Bologna in their penultimate league phase fixture this midweek and if Sahin's side lose to the Italian strugglers - who are yet to win a European match this season - the current head coach could be forced to leave, according to Sky Sports Germany.
The report claims that ex-United boss Ten Hag is considered to be a "serious candidate" for the position. The Dutch coach is no stranger to German football after spending two years coaching Bayern Munich's second team between 2013 and 2015.
Ten Hag has been regularly spotted attending Dortmund matches this season, as he remains without a job since getting sacked by United at the end of October.
While Ten Hag's immediate availability is a factor that very much works in his favour, Dortmund could turn to an interim solution before trying to lure Sebastian Hoeness away from Stuttgart. The impressive young coach led his side to a staggering second-place finish last season and once again has them back in the division's top four.
Stuttgart are unlikely to let Hoeness leave mid-season, but the 42-year-old is thought to have a release clause in his contract worth between 7-8m which can be triggered in the summer.
