Alexander Zverev's run at the 2025 Australian Open continues smoothly, although the German champion did not play his best tennis against Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals. The current world number 2 could have lost both the first and second sets, but he was good at raising his level in the decisive moments and prevailing against a very dangerous opponent on this surface.
At this stage of the tournament, Sascha must show that he has improved compared to the past from the point of view of mental strength and resilience. His next opponent will be Novak Djokovic, who achieved yet another feat in his legendary career by eliminating Carlos Alcaraz in the big quarterfinal match.
Zverev will face an opponent who knows all the secrets of the Rod Laver Arena and who is looking to lift his 11th trophy at Melbourne Park. Nole and Sascha have already faced each other in this tournament, more precisely in the 2021 edition, when the Serbian legend prevailed at the end of a very spectacular and balanced match.
Zverev remains focused
Thanks to the success against Paul today, Alexander overtook his compatriot Boris Becker for the most victories in Melbourne (30) and claimed his 106th Grand Slam tournament victory (surpassing Tommy Haas in this particular standing).
I think the big difference in the thing that everybody looks at is Boris Becker lifted this trophy twice, Zverev said in his press conference. I havent yet. So that is, I think, way more important than just match wins.
Of course, Im happy to be on that list, and Im happy to be in that conversation of greats in German tennis. But yeah, lifting the trophy is what is on my mind.
Sascha doesn't want to be distracted and his only goal is to finally break the curse of winning a Major tournament.
The world number 2 has worked hard in recent months to file his weaknesses and the time has come to show the whole world that he is ready for his definitive consecration.
