Despite reaching the final at the 2025 Australian Open, Alexander Zverev is still not so close to winning a Grand Slam title. The current world No.2 has certainly improved in several aspects of his game in recent months, as evidenced by his results at the end of 2024 and his excellent run at Melbourne Park earlier this year.
In the rounds leading up to the final, the German champion was more consistent and won all his matches with great authority, making the difference in the decisive moments and avoiding wasting too much energy.
In addition, the Germanplayer was also helped by the injury to his left thigh that forced Novak Djokovic to retire after the first set of the semifinal. For this reason, Sascha had arrived at the final of the first Grand Slam of the season in top form and hoped to compete on equal terms with world number 1 Jannik Sinner.
His expectations turned out to be very far from reality. The Italian ace dominated the match from start to finish, prevailed in three sets over the iconic Rod Laver Arena and did not give him a single break point. Sascha himself during his press conference had to admit the clear superiority of his opponent and was very sad about the progress of the final, in which he was outclassed in all respects.
Zverev needs to improve further
Alexander will try to break this curse at the French Open, but it is evident that his current level is still not enough to win a Major title.
In an interview with Eurosport, former French ace Arnaud Clement discussed Sascha's chances of winning a Grand Slam in the near future: "I'm sorry to be strict, but I don't think he has much chance of winning a Major title anytime soon. If there are no further improvements in his game between now and Roland Garros, he will hardly be able to win."
The former world number 10 continued: "If Sinner is suspended due to the doping case and Carlitos Alcaraz is injured, maybe Sascha will have a chance. However, if these two players are in good shape, the German has no chance of defeating them."
