Lleyton Hewitt is disappointed a bit not to have Nick Kyrgios this week but isn't ruling out the 2022 Wimbledon finalist's return to the Davis Cup in the future.

Between 2013 and 2019, the 29-year-old regularly competed in the Davis Cup.

But then due to what he felt was disrespectful behavior from some Australian tennis fans, he decided to stop representing his country in the team competition.

However, that ended earlier this year when Australian Davis Cup team captain Hewitt confirmed that Kyrgios agreed to play in their qualifiers tie against Sweden.

Unfortunately for all parties, the former world No. 13 suffered an abdominal injury in his first tournament back in 18 months so he had to withdraw from this weekend's clash against Sweden.

"I was excited to think of the potential for him to be back in the Davis Cup team, but it wasn't to be and obviously he's very underdone with his body, so it's not surprising he's got an injury trying to play five-set tennis straight away without many matches," Hewitt said.

"Hopefully, fingers crossed, we get through and he may be an option down the track."

Kyrgios issued an injury update

On Thursday, the seven-time ATP champion shared that he was back home and working on recovering from his abdominal issue.

Also, he revealed that if everything goes well in the upcoming period, he plans to play again at the Indian Wells Masters, which starts on March 5th.

"To my fans! Appreciate all the support - I will be back home training with my next event being Indian Wells," Kyrgioswrote in an update posted on his Instagram Story.

"Was bad timing as I was battling through a 4cm abdominal tear/strain at the Australian Open. I will be doing everything I can to rehab and prepare for the next events."
