Paul Heyman has never been far from the creative side of professional wrestling. From running ECW to leading WWE SmackDowns writing team in the early 2000s, to his time as Executive Director of Raw, Heyman has always played a major role in shaping the stories fans see on TV.
But does he miss writing weekly shows? Not exactly. Speaking with Sports Media with Richard Deitsch, Heyman revealed that his current role with The Bloodline and his work with WWE superstars still satisfies his creative needs.
The contributions to The Bloodline storyline that I am allowed by Paul Levesque satisfy a lot of my writing needs, Heyman explained. But his influence extends far beyond The Bloodline. He works closely with talent on Raw and SmackDown, helping them develop promos and shape their characters.
When I sit with a Bron Breakker, Whats the concept here? This is the concept. Okay. How would you approach that concept? I dont care how Bronson Rechsteiner would approach that concept. How would Bron Breakker approach it? Dont talk to me as Bronson Rechsteiner, talk to me as Bron Breakker. As hes talking, Bron Breakker formulates that opinion, and we end up writing it together, Heyman detailed.
This approach isnt limited to just one or two wrestlers. Heyman confirmed Ringside News exclusives from last year, confirming he does the same for stars like Rhea Ripley, Nia Jax, Gunther, Cody Rhodes, and CM Punk, ensuring their promos feel authentic. While hes no longer crafting entire scripts for Raw or SmackDown, hes still deeply involved in the writing processjust in a more collaborative way.
I cant tell you that I miss writing because I actually think Im doing as much writing now as I have in the past. Its just not 11 segments for SmackDown or 16 segments for Raw in a fully fleshed-out script that needs to be proofread and commercials added and time breaks. Its a different style of writing, and it goes along with the fact that Im collaborating with these talents, Heyman said.
Heymans influence in WWE remains as strong as ever, even if hes not scripting entire shows from start to finish. With The Bloodline storyline continuing to evolve and top stars leaning on his expertise, its clear that his creative fingerprints are all over WWEs biggest moments.
