Bianca Andreescu's planned return to tennis later this month has been delayed after the former world No. 4 had to undergo an emergency appendectomy surgery.
After struggling with her lingering back issue and not playing any tournaments since October, the Canadian also missed the start of 2025 but was hoping to be able to play in late February at the WTA 500 tournament in Merida.
Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, that won't be happening as her bad luck with injuries and health setbacks continues.
Also, Andreescu will at least miss the Sunshine Double and tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.
If her recovery goes well, the Canadian - who was plummeted to No. 130 in the world - hopes to be ready for the clay season in April.
Andreescu: I felt some sharp pain, which led to an emergency appendectomy
"Hey everyone. Quick life update- training was going so well and I was very excited for the wtameridaopen to be my first tournament of the 2025 season," the 2019 US Open winner said in a message posted on her Instagram Story.
"However, I unexpectedly started experiencing some sharp pain in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy. The surgery went smoothly, and I'm on the road to recovery.
"My plan is to be back on the court for the clay season, stronger than ever. Thanks so much for all your support. Can't wait to get back to competing!"
Throughout her career, Andreescu has often battled injury issues and there were also times when she would step away from tennis to address her mental health.
Last year, she only kicked off her 2024 season at the French Open and posted a 11-10 record before putting an end to her season.
Before reaching the Tokyo quarterfinal in her last tournament played of 2024, the former world No. 4 was on a five-match losing streak.
