After months of speculation surrounding Rey Fenixs status in AEW, the former AEW Tag Team Champion has finally broken his silence. While rumors swirled about his potential exitespecially after his merchandise vanished from ShopAEW.comFenix has now confirmed that he remains under contract with the company. However, despite his commitment, hes still waiting on AEW to call him back to work.
Speaking with Lalo Elizarrars, Fenix opened up about his time away from the ring, explaining that hes been using this period to heal from past injuries, focus on his family, and run Republic of Lucha, the store he and his brother Penta launched.
Mainly, my life has always been about wrestling, and its not like I stopped training. On the contrary, I have more time to train. I have more time to perfect my skills. I have more time to create new things, to work on my injuries, to work on my body, and mainly, to work on my head. Im doing personal projects, like buying my house and a future for my children, but I could have had the option of continuing to work every weekend, but nobody stays in a place where they are not wanted.
Fenix made it clear that while he remains dedicated to wrestling, he also acknowledges the struggles of balancing work and personal life, especially as a father.
Our work gives us many things, but there are also many times when it takes time away from us, not just moments. Mainly with my eldest sonsince he was born, I spent the first two years working in Europe, Japan, England, Mexico, and all over the place. Nothing to complain about, but today I see it with my youngest son. With my eldest son, I missed out on his first words and his first steps. His first word was papa, and I was not even there.
He also reflected on his own career and the impact he and Penta have had in paving the way for Mexican wrestlers in the U.S.
Before being the Rey Fenix that you know, I was the Rey Fenix who opened doors, who broke windows, who started to earn an international audience through pure hard work. Through sheer hard work, I earned a position at an international level together with my brother who, I dont want to sound self-centered, but very few have achieved. After the generation of Juventud Guerrera, Rey Mysterio, and Psicosis, I dont think anyone else has achieved things like that.
With so many rumors about his contract floating around, Fenix finally addressed his AEW deal, confirming that he is still signed and even has an extension in place. Despite this, hes still in limbo, waiting for AEW to figure out whats next.
Yes, basically Im still under contract with an additional extension. I am waiting to be used, to be called to work, or to have my situation clarified a little more.
With Penta now in WWE, speculation about Fenix making the jump has only grown stronger. But for now, hes still locked into AEWhes just waiting for them to pick up the phone.
Do you think AEW should be doing more with Rey Fenix? Should he follow Penta to WWE, or is there still a place for him in AEW? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!
