Viktor Hovland is a golfer who is considered by many to be one of the greatest potentials of this sport. Although much more was expected from him the previous two years, it is still not too late for the Norwegian to improve his form and make this year special.
Last year, the young golfer did not manage to celebrate on any PGA Tour and DP World Tour, with apparently some barrier in his head.
Hovland decided to split with his coach Joe Mayo, even twice.
In an interview with Life on Tour, the Norwegian golfer stressed that he is a person who sometimes thinks too much, admitting that he is not quite happy with the captions in the media that sometimes cross the line.
Im a little bit of a tinkerer, yeah 100 percent. But I think in the media a little bit, its been portrayed as Im this madman, which isnt entirely wrong. But its not like I made a conscious decision that, okay, I won the FedEx Cup, Ive got to change everything up to get to the next level. Thats not really how it went down, he said, as quoted by The Golfing Gazette.
Viktor Hovland talks about his progress and problems
Hovland had to change some finesse and aspects of the game in order to adapt and improve. It seems that on this path to 'perfection' he realized that sometimes the point is quite different.
Hovland understood that some things do not work, and many times he had to adapt. However, it seems as if Viktor wants to return to the old ways.
Things just evolve over time without you really trying to consciously change anything. And as you progress, you do that too far, and now the things that used to work has just gotten a little too far off, and now I made compensations on top of that, and now suddenly, the movement that I used to make is different."- he said.
The Norwegian referred to the example of several golfers who, after reaching the top, began to have problems with their swing or game. This makes them doubt their own qualities and represents a huge problem.
The young golfer is optimistic that he can play good golf, although he admits that his swing poses problems for him. Viktor is open to solving the problem and working on it.
