The Young Bucks latest run as IWGP Tag Team Champions was short-lived, and now we know why.
Matthew and Nicholas Jackson captured the titles at Wrestle Dynasty on January 5, 2025, defeating Great-O-Khan & Jeff Cobb and Hiromu Takahashi & Tetsuya Naito. However, their reign came to an abrupt end at The New Beginning on February 11, when Naito and Takahashi took the gold.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the whole plan was about elevating Naito and Takahashi as a team, using The Young Bucks as a major stepping stone.
The whole thing was to get over Naito and Hiromu as a team because Naito, who is the biggest star theyve got, can be in championship matches on a championship team because hes got Hiromu, whos really freakin good, to carry the matches, Meltzer explained.
So its a way to keep Naito in the spotlight and use Naitos name and make the tag team titles mean something. So they wanted them to beat a great team to win the belts.
As for whats next, Matthew Jackson has already hinted that their break from AEW is coming to an end. Time to come back to work, he wrote, suggesting that their return to AEW could be happening sooner rather than later.
The Young Bucks havent been seen in an AEW ring since losing the AEW World Tag Team Championship to Private Party on the October 30, 2024, episode of Dynamite.
