Before WWE fans turned on Road Dogg following the February 21 episode of SmackDown, the former DX member sat down with Chris Van Vliet on The Insight Podcast and had nothing but praise for Triple Hs leadership.
In the interview, recorded before SmackDown aired, Road Dogg credited Triple H for his ability to run WWEs creative direction, calling him the smartest dude Ive ever met in the business and detailing what its like to work under him.
When he became the guy, and I became a guy under him, he said, You can come to me and say and ask anything or do anything. Just know, sometimes Im going to say no to you. I said, Okay. I handle that. I dont have to manage or balance that because he is a solid leader.
Road Dogg emphasized that Triple H gives people the space to be creative but knows when to step in and take control when necessary.
Hes a solid dude. He doesnt let you. You just be you, and he wont let you get out of line. Its not like hell put you back in it. Its weird what a solid head on his shoulders. I dont know where it came from, but hes the smartest dude Ive ever met to the business. When it comes to wrestling, hes the guy.
Ironically, just days after this interview, Road Dogg found himself in the middle of a major controversy, as fans blamed him for one of the worst episodes of SmackDown in recent memory. His return to SmackDowns creative team coincided with a heavily criticized episode featuring The Rocks lengthy promo with Cody Rhodes, which fans said dragged the show down instead of building momentum for WrestleMania 41.
After the episode, social media erupted with backlash, with many demanding Road Dogg be removed from his position. One frustrated fan wrote, Triple H aint writing the show (at least on SmackDown), its Road Dogg. He sucked in 2019 and he sucks now. Others took it even further, saying, Is it too soon to fire Road Dogg?
While the timing of the interview was before SmackDown aired, it now raises the questionwill WWE continue to stand by Road Dogg despite the backlash, or will the company be forced to make changes if fan outrage continues?
