The champion from Athens seemed destined to compete to win Grand Slam titles, instead the rise of two young champions such as Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz and his sudden decline have made him a second-rate player, who struggles to make a difference in the most prestigious events.
'Tsitsi' realized that he had to change something to become a better player and broke off the collaboration with his father Apostolos, who had a great influence on him both on and off the court. Stefanos is also trying to become more aggressive and get closer to the net, but the desired results have not arrived for the moment.
Tsitsipas tries new solutions
The 2019 ATP Finals champion is playing in the Dubai ATP 500 this week, a tournament in which he reached the final six years ago losing to his idol Roger Federer (who won the 100th title of his legendary career on that occasion).
A lot has changed since that day and the Greek has to fight harder than ever to get back to the level he deserves.
Meanwhile, the former Top 10 defeated Italian ace Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets in the first round and hopes to be able to play his best tennis this week.
The 2023 Australian Open finalist also decided to change rackets for a very specific reason, which he explained in his press conference after the match against Sonego.
"There have been several changes on the ATP tour in recent years. For example, the balls and courts have become much slower than in the first years when I played and I'm trying to adapt to this new situation.
These conditions do not favor me and my game becomes less effective," Tsitsipas explained.
