Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have kicked off talks with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur over a new contract with the club.

Bentancur has entered the final 18 months of his current deal, signed in 2022 when the Uruguay international arrived in 21.5m switch from Juventus.

The Uruguay international has been a crucial player for Ange Postecoglou when healthy and, according to the Daily Mail, talks over a contract extension are at an early stage. Spurs see the 27-year-old as an "integral" player and a new contract would seek to secure his long-term future.

Bentancur has started 13 of the 16 Premier League games for which he's been available this season, having also missed a handful of games through injury. In January, he was sidelined with concussion for a 12-day period after a worrying head injury against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

Overall, however, the player has started each of Tottenham's last four Premier League games, the last three of which have ended in victory.

Postecoglou clearly favours Bentancur and has survived immense pressure in recent months, with injuries ravaging the squad at his disposal. But, as evidenced by a sudden upturn in results, those problems are now starting to ease.

Bentancur hasn't had a straightforward Spurs career to date. His debut season in 2022/23 was cut short in February by an anterior cruciate ligament that ran into the following campaign. Having recovered from that knee problem, torn ankle ligaments also sidelined him for several more weeks.
