Jon Rahm's joining LIV Golf did not produce particularly positive reactions among the golf public. More than a year has passed since his decision, but it still produces reactions.
Although the Spaniard was not open to joining LIV Golf upon the arrival of the controversial Tour on the golf scene, the 30-year-old changed his mind over time. When the Saudis put a huge amount of money on the table, it's hard to say no. Rahm felt it best on his skin.
Although he emphasized that besides the money, the format of this competition, the number of events and a few other things were key, some are not sure of the sincerity of his statements.
Jose Maria Olazabal reacts
Jose Maria Olazabal, a legend of Spanish golf, but also a well-known face of the global scene, commented on the fall of Jon Rahm in the OWGR rankings. Jon has dropped out of the top 50.
In an interview with El Pais, Olazabal pointed out that he was somewhat surprised, believing that the experienced golfer should leave the Saudi backed Tour.
Yes, I have to be honest. I was a little surprised. I insist I respect that you leave with those conditions, with the huge amount of millions that they put on the table for you,- he said.
Jon Rahm was once the world number 1, but by leaving the PGA Tour, it looks like he destroyed everything he had previously built. His compatriot emphasizes that Rahm made a big mistake, especially because he had the potential to write history on the most famous Tour.
Olazabal is not sure that Rahm can do the same again.
I respect that, but I was surprised because Jon had been very clear in his words and because he had an extraordinary future and the opportunity to make history in this sport, to write golden pages of golf. And I dont know if hell be able to do it now. I dont know if playing the LIV is the best preparation to be able to excel in the majors.
