Going into this year's Australian swing, the world No. 84 dealt with a pectoral muscle injury but didn't want to miss out on one of his favorite parts of the season.

After withdrawing from the Adelaide quarterfinal in his opening tournament of the year, the Australian also lost to Jack Draper in the Australian Open second round and also retired injured in his and Nick Kyrgios' doubles opener at Melbourne Park.

In the past month and a half, Kokkinakis spoke with the doctors and tried to see how to deal with the injury.

In the end, he was told to surgically address it.

"Been struggling for a little while with this Probably my toughest challenge to date," the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram.

"Ive been trying to find the answers to an ongoing Pec injury that I havent been able to fix. Lets see how this goes.

Kokkinakis' injury history is a long one

If you remember well, the 2022 Adelaide champion started battling numerous injuries right from the start of his career and had shoulder surgery in 2015.

Besides the mentioned shoulder surgery, he also dealt with groin, pectoral and elbow issues very early in his career.

After this year's Australian Open, the 28-year-old indicated that he would probably go under the knife again.

"The doctor advised me not to play and I'm going to need to do a serious procedure now, probably," Kokkinakis shared after he was forced to retire during his Australian Open doubles match.

"I've got to speak to as many experts as I can, but I can't serve, I can't hit a high forehand and I'm in a lot of pain."
