The situation between Rey Fenix and AEW continues to heat up, and it looks like his departure might finally be in motion.
According to Chris Featherstone, negotiations between Tony Khan and Fenix are moving forward, with a resolution expected soon. AEW sources have informed me that negotiations between Tony Khan and Rey Fenix to end Fenixs tenure with the company are progressing, and resolution is expected to happen soon. I was also informed that Tony Khan has been heavily advised to put an end to this soon regarding Fenixs holding period.
Fenix, who has been vocal about wanting out of AEW, saw his contract extended after the company added injury time to his dealkeeping him locked in despite his frustrations. Originally, AEW reportedly considered releasing Fenix during its February roster cuts, which saw Malakai Black, Ricky Starks, and Miro let go. However, Sean Ross Sapp revealed that the company ultimately chose to hold onto Fenix instead.
I had heard Friday that AEW releases were either happening or coming. At that moment, I thought it was just the Bear Boulder situation, which they fortunately very quickly took care of. I had heard for a while that within AEW, they had at least considered releasing or letting contracts lapse on a few talent that were not happy and wanted to go elsewhere. At one point, they considered Rey Fenix. They didnt end up doing that.
With WWE waiting in the wings, the speculation only grows. Dave Meltzer recently reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE is already laying the groundwork for Fenixs potential arrival. They are making plans for Rey Fenix, although there has been no confirmation Fenix has been released from his AEW contract.
For now, Fenix remains in limbo, stuck in AEW while waiting for an official release. But with negotiations moving, WWE seems more than ready to welcome him when the time comes.
