The rivalry between Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras was certainly one of the most legendary in the history of tennis. The two American players have played many truly epic matches against each other thanks to their contrast of styles, which has helped make their challenges even more thrilling and has divided fans by creating two opposing factions.

As everyone knows by now, Agassi has become the new captain of Team World in Laver Cuptaking the place of his illustrious compatriot John McEnroe (who served as captain from 2017 to 2024). Andre will make his debut at this event starting with this year's edition, which will take place in San Francisco in September.

During the press conference presenting the event, Agassi was also asked to recall his long and spectacular rivalry with Pete.

After finishing their professional careers, Agassi remained more in touch with the world of tennis both as an analyst and as a coach (he followed Novak Djokovic in the most delicate moment of his entire career).

In contrast, Sampras has maintained his very private attitude and has made very few appearances in the last decade.

The last time he appeared at a professional tournament was during the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in 2019.

"Pete and I faced each other many times during our professional careers and many battles have remained in my mind to this day," Andre recalled.

"Sampras inflicted some of the most painful defeats of my career on me, but I wouldn't have become a great player if I hadn't faced a legend like him," he added.

A little over a month ago, Agassi announced that the vice-captain of Team World will be Pat Rafter (two-time US Open champion).

"I am honored to join Team World as vice-captain. The Laver Cup is one of the most anticipated events of the season and when Andre asked me to help him in this new adventure I accepted almost immediately" Pat commented.
