Kenny Omega is back in action with AEW and NJPW, but one match fans thought was inevitable was never actually in the works.
Last year, NJPW released a video featuring Omega and Japanese wrestling icon Hiroshi Tanahashi, hinting at a possible team-up or clash at Wrestle Dynasty. The footage had fans convinced that something major was brewing, but now, sources confirm that it was nothing more than a well-edited tease.
Before his return, Omega made a trip to Japan and reunited with Tanahashi, sparking immediate speculation. However, Fightful Select reports AEWs creative team had never formally discussed any storyline involving the two, meaning there was never a plan for them to join forces or square off in the ring.
Sources within NJPW also confirmed that no official booking plans were made for Omega and Tanahashi. The video was simply edited in a way that fueled speculation, but there was never a concrete direction behind it. While some assumed it was part of a long-term build, it turns out it was just a case of the internet running wild with an idea that was never on the table.
With Omega now fully recovered and back in the mix, theres always a chance the two legends could share the ring down the road, but as of now, nothing was ever set in stone.
