Mercedes Mones debut in AEW had a major impact on the promotions landscape. As a celebrity, she understands the highs and lows of fame, and now Mone has called out aggressive fans who struggle to separate her from her on-screen character.
While speaking to Katee Sackhoff, Mercedes Mone was asked if its hard for her to be two different people, her real self and her wrestling character, and if people understand the difference.
Mone said that most people dont understand it, especially in wrestling. Wrestling feels like a 24/7 fantasy world, not just for the wrestlers but also for the fans. Wrestlers are like superheroes because they are on TV several times a week, always playing their characters.
Because of this, she is almost always in character, even on social media. Thats just how she presents herself every day. She noted that the people dont really know the real Mercedes Varnado because she doesnt get to show that side. The person fans see on TV is completely different from who she really is.
The TBS Champion stated that she likes having that separation because it lets her have a private life. When shes at home, she can relax, be with her dogs, and enjoy her own space without acting like a larger-than-life character. Mone simply loves having that time to just be herself.
However, social media makes things more difficult for her. She added that fans often think she is the same person they see on TV, and sometimes they can be too aggressive, and she called them out on the same. That can be frustrating, but she prefers playing a character rather than showing her real self to the public all the time.
Thats not all, as Mercedes Mone even criticized male wrestlers for blocking womens opportunities in the industry. Therefore, its very understandable why Mercedes Mone can get annoyed by fans who simply dont understand that she isnt the character she portrays on television and we hope that eventually changes.
