Joao Fonseca is certainly one of the top surprises in the first two months of 2025, although everyone knew he had really impressive potential. The young Brazilian had already shown flashes of his enormous talent last year, when he reached the quarterfinals at the Rio Open and won the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah in December.

His rise became even brighter in early 2025, when he won the Canberra Challenger in January and made it through the Australian Open qualifiers without dropping a single set during his run.
Everyone was curious to see how he would play against Andrey Rublev in the first round in such a major stadium and no one was disappointed. Joao put in an incredible performance against a Top 10 player and scored a very special victory, scoring 50 winners and making incredible shots from every area of the court.
His run at Melbourne Park ended against Lorenzo Sonego at the next round, but everyone understood that he was facing a predestined one.
Fonseca returned to shine in Buenos Aires a couple of weeks ago, lifting the first ATP trophy of his career at just 18 years old. Many former players and insiders are convinced that he can enter the Top 20 as early as the end of this season.

Fonseca wants to impress again
The Brazilian star will be among the most anticipated players at Indian Wells the first Masters 1000 of the season in which he will participate for the first time in his young career.
Joao has already played a Masters 1000 the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open where he defeated Alex Michelsen in the first round before losing to Cameron Norrie.
Fonseca arrives in California as world number 80 due to the premature elimination at the Rio Open, where he was not able to handle the pressure well, but he can already boast a best ranking of number 68.
It will be very interesting to see how he plays in Indian Wells, a tournament that should suit his game well.
