Serena Williams ended her glorious professional career in the summer of 2022, after playing in the US Open and receiving an unforgettable tribute on the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The former American champion has made the history of women's tennis and is probably the best player of all time, although it is never easy to compare different eras.
When she realized that she was no longer competitive at the highest level, Serena decided to retire and start a new chapter in her life. It's no secret that Williams has always had many other passions besides tennis and unlike his sister Venus, who hasn't retired yet despite having nothing left to give to the sport she doesn't miss the professional tour.
Recently, the former world number 1 announced her entry into the world of the WNBA, as she became a shareholder in the Toronto Tempo's basketball team.
"I'm really happy to join the first Canadian team in WNBA history," said Serena.
"I have always maintained that women's sport should be promoted in all its forms and also represents an extraordinary investment opportunity.
This project is very interesting and I can't wait to see what happens," she added.
Serena is a global icon
During her legendary career, Williams lifted many trophies and became an icon in every corner of the world.
She and her sister Venus have had a huge impact on women's tennis, which has to thank for their fundamental contribution that it has grown so much in the modern era.
Their story has inspired documentaries and movies, prompting many girls to approach tennis and sport in general.
"You have to accept that life also goes through some painful defeats" - revealed the 23-time Grand Slam champion in a recent interview with The New York Times.
"This also applies to my investments: if I make a mistake, I try to learn my lesson and do better next time," she concluded.
