After 25 years, the first Masters 1000 of the season chose to move from 'Plexipave' to 'Laykold'. A revolution that should make the courts more similar to those of the Miami Open and the US Open. The Indian Wells surface has always been characterized by its extreme slowness and very high rebounds, while now it should be faster and favor a more offensive game.

However during the press conferences before the start of the tournament the opinions of the players on the new surface were very mixed.
