Tommy Paul is certainly one of the players who have improved the most in recent months, having achieved brilliant and very consistent results especially on hard courts. In the last two Grand Slam tournaments the 2024 US Open and the 2025 Australian Open the American ace was defeated respectively by Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 and Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.
If we add to this the semifinal reached at Melbourne Park in 2023 lost to Serbian legend Novak Djokovic it is safe to say that Tommy is a really dangerous player on fast surfaces and that he can undermine even top players in his best days.
Recent results allowed Paul to enter the Top 10 of the ATP ranking earlier this year and his future looks really bright, especially if he can raise his level on red clay and grass as well.
The American had to withdraw from the Acapulco ATP 500 due to an intestinal virus, while his run at Indian Wells ended against a deluxe version of Daniil Medvedev. The Russian ace is going through the darkest moment of his career, but this particularly slow surface has allowed him to stem Tommy's game well.
Tommy Paul is underrated
According to what Patrick McEnroe revealed in an interview with 'Tennis365', Paul can be considered the most underrated player on the ATP tour: Tommy Paul is probably under-rated as an athlete and is probably the most pure tennis player of the current group, so all of them are in there as contenders, but none of them I would predict are favorites to win a Major.
Patrick also talked about Joao Fonseca: I would throw Joao Fonseca into the mix as someone who may also be contending for majors in the next few years. So its not going to be easy, but it is nice to see the Americans doing so well in the ranking.
Paul will hardly be able to be a contender at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, while he will be much more dangerous at the US Open.
Fonseca - on the other hand - has immense talent, but it still seems too early for certain goals.
