Free agent defensive tackle Javon Hargrave has agreed to a two-year, $30 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday.
The deal, which includes $19 million guaranteed, came shortly after Hargrave was released by the San Francisco 49ers with a post-June 1 designation.
He had been two seasons into the four-year, $84 million deal he signed in March 2023. The 32-year-old appeared in just 19 games in two seasons in San Francisco, posting 8 sacks and 51 tackles.
Hargrave is part of the Vikings' concerted effort to elevate the interior disruption capabilities of their defensive line. Last season, they had 47 pressures from players aligned at defensive tackle, the fifth-fewest in the league. Their 7.5 sacks from those players ranked No. 31.
In addition to Hargrave, the Vikings previously signed former Washington defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. They will team up with incumbents Harrison Phillips and Jalen Redmond to give the Vikings a deeper rotation. A lack of depth at the position forced Phillips to play 66% of the Vikings' defensive snaps over the past two seasons, a high number for a defensive tackle that will be lowered with the help of Hargrave and Allen.
Hargrave finished 2024 on injured reserve after partially tearing his right triceps in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams.
Niners general manager John Lynch said the team had interest in keeping Hargrave after his release, but it would require him returning at a reduced rate.
Before joining the Niners, Hargrave was considered one of the league's best defensive tackles. He was a Pro Bowl selection with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 and has 45.5 sacks in his career, which began with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2016.
