The AEW womens division could be on the verge of a major showdown, as Mercedes Mon and Athena are reportedly on a collision courseand it might happen sooner than expected.
Fightful Select reports that an Athena vs. Mercedes Mon match is the current plan, with some sources indicating it could go down at AEW Dynasty. Mon has been the TBS Champion for nearly ten months, while Athena has held the ROH Womens Championship for over two years, making this a battle of two of the most dominant women in the industry.
The speculation gained traction after Billie Starkz was shown watching Mons match against Momo Watanabe at AEW Revolution. Starkz has been heavily involved with Athena in ROH, and her recent loss to Mon on the March 19 episode of AEW Dynamite only added more fuel to the fire. Sources suggest this interaction wasnt just for showit was strategically done to lay the groundwork for Mon vs. Athena.
Despite working together over three dozen times throughout their careers and even teaming up on occasion, Athena and Mon have never squared off in a singles match. Their only previous encounter in the same match came in 2018, when Athena won a triple-threat bout involving Mon.
With more than six years since their last in-ring interaction, both women have evolved into completely different competitorssetting the stage for what could be a monumental first-time singles clash.
