World no. 2 faced two break points in the sixth game and denied them with powerful serves before holding for 5-1. Alexander served for the opener at 5-2 and landed an ace, wrapping up the first part of the duel in 33 minutes.

The favorite provided five fine holds in the second set and forged the advantage with an early break. Jacob missed a game point in the first game and faced a break point. The Briton saved it with an ace and avoided an early setback.

Zverev created another break point in the third game and converted it when his rival missed a backhand. The German held at 15 in game four and extended his streak. Alexander fired a service winner in the sixth game and moved 4-2 in front.

Alexander created a break chance in game seven with a backhand down the line winner. Jacob denied with a service winner and held, remaining within one break deficit. Zverev clinched the eighth game with an unreturned serve for a 5-3 lead.
