Alberto Del Rio is at the center of major controversy after an altercation with fans at a recent AAA event spiraled out of control and now Konnan is revealing exactly what went down behind the scenes. As a result of the incident, Del Rio has been hit with a 180-day suspension by the Tijuana Wrestling Commission.
The situation unfolded during an AAA show in Tijuana where Del Rio, who was working as a heel, went off-script and entered the crowd. Fans were already heated, but things got out of hand fast and according to Konnan, Del Rio played a major role in escalating the chaos.
Speaking on his Keepin It 100 podcast, Konnan broke it all down: I said, Your biggest mistake was going into the crowd. I know you threw the chairyoure a heel, and youve got incredible heel heat right now.
Konnan explained that Del Rio got on the mic during the show and further provoked the crowd, who were already angry with his in-ring persona. He went out there, got on the microphone, and got heat. Now, imagineeveryone knows wrestling is entertainment. But when you get people so fired up that theyre throwing things at you and challenging you to a fight in 2025, thats something else, he said.
The heat turned physical when fans began throwing objects at Del Rio including Mexican coins, which are known to be particularly heavy. One coin reportedly struck Del Rio under the eye, and thats when he lost control.
He told meand I know this for a fact because a friend of mine was sitting nearbythat he was getting bombarded, Konnan said. If youve ever seen a Mexican coin, theyre heavy, and he got hit under his eye with one. He was getting hit with a whole bunch of stuff, and for a moment, he lost it.
In retaliation, Del Rio hurled a chair into the crowd but it didnt land where he intended. According to Konnan, the guy who threw a chair at him firstI guess it bounced and hit a lady.
At first, Konnan believed Del Rio had hit the woman directly, but after reviewing footage and hearing from eyewitnesses, it appeared the chair struck someone else before bouncing into the woman. Regardless, the consequences were immediate and severe. Konnan emphasized that stepping into the crowd especially one thats intoxicated and hostile is never the right move.
I told him, Bro, the biggest mistake you made was going over the barrier. At that point, you already had the crowd riled up, and they were drunk. You saw what happened. Just never, ever, ever go over the barriers, he stressed.
Del Rio has since gone public, claiming that he was the real victim in the altercation. He criticized the Tijuana Wrestling Commission for how they handled the matter, insisting that their response was unfair and one-sided. Still, the 180-day suspension stands, and hes effectively banned from competing in Tijuana until the fall.
This is just the latest chapter in Del Rios long and controversial career, and while fans continue to debate who was truly at fault, its clear the incident has done serious damage to his current standing in the industry.
