Cain Velasquez just took a major step in his long-standing legal battle and he could be a free man in under two years.
On March 24, the former UFC Heavyweight Champion entered a no contest plea to several charges, including attempted murder, stemming from a 2022 incident that made headlines across both the sports and entertainment worlds. Velasquez was involved in a high-speed chase in California, during which he fired a gun at Harry Goularte Jr., the man accused of molesting Velasquezs son at a daycare center. Instead of hitting Goularte, Velasquez struck Goulartes stepfather.
Velasquez has now been sentenced to five years in prison, but hes getting credit for 1,283 days already served, which means he could be released in less than two years. Hell also face four years of supervised probation once hes out.
Before his legal troubles, Cain Velasquez had stepped into a very different ring WWE. In 2019, Velasquez made his WWE debut during the Fox debut episode of SmackDown, confronting Brock Lesnar after Lesnar won the WWE Championship. The confrontation set up a highly-publicized match between the two at Crown Jewel 2019 in Saudi Arabia. The bout was brief, with Lesnar submitting Velasquez in under two minutes, but it was one of WWEs top marquee matchups that year.
Velasquez later competed in Mexicos AAA promotion, where he was praised for his impressive athleticism and lucha libre skills. Despite a short run in WWE, he left the door open for future appearances though his arrest in early 2022 abruptly put his wrestling career on hold.
Now, with a resolution in his criminal case and a clock ticking toward release, fans are already speculating about whether Cain could return to MMA or professional wrestling once hes out assuming he wants to.
