The countdown to this years WrestleMania is in full swing. Including today, there are 26 days until the weekend of April 19 and 20. 52 matches in the history of WrestleMania include women. Diva Dirt will countdown two matches daily to rank all 52 leading up to this years event.
Lets kick this off with two matches making it to the bottom of the ranking. Number 52 comes from WrestleMania 25 where the women were not treated well at all. They were treated so badly that a man won the womens match.
52. WrestleMania 25
Santina Marella wins Battle Royal to be crowned Miss. WrestleMania
The only womens match at WrestleMania 25 was a Battle Royal that crowned Miss. WrestleMania. The participants included the following Alicia Fox, Brie Bella, Eve Torres, Gail Kim, Jackie Gayda, Jillian Hall, Joy Giovanni, Katie Lea Burchill, Kelly Kelly, Layla, Maria, Maryse, Melina, Michelle McCool, Mickie James, Molly Holly, Natalya, Nikki Bella, Rosa Mendes, Santina Marella, Sunny, Tiffany, Torrie Wilson, and Victoria.
They had all of these talents in a match to get the title of Miss. WrestleMania and the winner was Santina Marella who last eliminated Beth Phoenix. Theres nothing wrong with a comedic aspect to wrestling. It has been there and always will be there. However, the misogyny of a man, dressed in drag, winning the only womens match on a card isnt exactly exciting for womens wrestling fans. When you also take a look at this match with future HOFs The Bella Twins, Michelle McCool, Molly Holly, Beth Phoenix, and Torrie Wilson who could have very well won this match and didnt. You also have a plethora of former champions in this match that could have taken the win. The current champion at the time was Melina and they couldnt even give her a championship match.
The period this took place in was also still the cringe commentary and them clearly not paying attention to the women. Calling Gail Kim, one of the Bella Twins when she was eliminated was something. It also didnt help that the match was under 8 minutes and the eliminations were rather quick due to having 25 Divas in the match.
If the outcome was different, it could have saved this match a bit and it wouldnt have been ranked on our list at the very bottom.
51. WrestleMania 2000 (16)
Terri w/Moolah def. The Kat w/Mae Young Catfight
My oh my was this terrible. First, why did The Kat have to be naked in the backstage segment before the match? Oh, right, Vince McMahon.
This was the longest 2-minute and 24-second match ever. Whether it was Mae Young on the ring apron trying to flash the crowd, or Val Venis being involved in this match AT ALL it was just nonsense. However, it did fit into that time period where bra and panties matches were held to a higher standard than women wrestling better than men. And why was the winner of this match whoever could throw their opponent out of the ring?
At least both women looked good and Terri can say she won a WrestleMania match.
