Predictions regarding the final deal between PIF and the PGA Tour vary. While there are those who believe that this story will not see the final act, there is another side that is convinced that the final agreement will be reached soon.
Webb Simpson, a well-known name on the golf scene, believes the deal is closer than Rory McIlroy expects. The Northern Irishman pointed out during one of the tournaments that it does not seem that the final deal is close, but Simpson, who is the Policy Board member for the PGA Tour, believes that after the conversation with the PIF boss, things seem closer to an agreement than before.
"I think were definitely closer because I think at that time SSG [Strategic Sports Group] was brand new," he told Sports Illustrated, as quoted by Express.
They were getting their feet wet.
I think now there is an understanding more of who he [Al-Rumayyan] is, what he wants, what hes trying to accomplish with LIV. At least we have a better understanding. On paper, maybe it doesnt look like were any further. I do believe we are."
Webb Simpson explains his views
Considering how long the negotiations have been going on, it has become clear that there are certain obstacles blocking the deal. Although fans speculated about various things, it seems that the team aspect and different visions regarding the team aspect is the main obstacle. The 39-year-old American is not sure how useful the team aspect can be regarding the PGA Tour.
"To me, its hard to get your mind around the team concept," -he said.
"Ive gotten that feedback from golf fans. You can get your mind around the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup once a year. But the franchise model or Formula 1 model on the PGA Tour its hard to see a future in that."
In addition to the team aspect, it is difficult to determine whether there is anything else that is blocking the agreement. However, both parties are clearly open to an agreement, aware that it is probably the best solution for the future of this sport.
