The 66-year-old did not perform well at the last Masters, revealing that he felt pain in his back.
Couples explained his decisions and choice, somewhat disappointed.
My back is shot, - he said, as quoted by Golf.
I have more stuff on just to play. The longer the club, Im OK. I didnt have any speed. I was driving it 260 [yards]. But most of them were going straight. It was fun. It was really difficult. If Id have had more woods, honestly, yesterday, I probably could have shot 75, but I didnt know I kind of downplayed how bad I felt. I should have had 11-wood to hit 140 yards. I couldnt even hit an 8-iron. I couldnt swing.
Fred Couples' strategy
After that, Couples decided to change certain things, wanting to improve his game but at the same time make it easier for himself.

Although he has vast experience behind him, he is aware that practice is the key to everything. Fred has a clear strategy for Augusta, putting an emphasis on the swing, as he wants to swing physically as hard as he can.
Fred explained his reasons for doing so.
Im playing well and Im trying to do a couple things in my game which I never really thought about, Couples said.
One of them would be Im trying to swing physically as hard as I can with my driver. I said that last week, too.
Because when I go to Augusta, I cant Ive got to pick up six or eight or 10 yards. So Im trying to do it now, and if I feel OK when Im done, Ill come and hit 20 drivers, really swing hard. And I drove it well last week.

Couples has a lifetime invitation and in a conversation with the Masters director he said he doesn't want to embarrass himself, but he also said he won't embarrass himself.
The Masters director replied that he was aware of that and wanted Couples to continue playing.
After such a reaction, the experienced golfer admits that he was relieved.
