UEFA have confirmed they have opened an investigation into the conduct of Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Ceballos and Vinicius Junior in the aftermath of Real Madrid's controversial Champions League last-16 victory over Atletico Madrid.

Carlo Ancelotti's side booked their place in the quarter-final following a penalty shoot-out which was shrouded in controversy when Julian Alvarez's spot kick was ruled out by VAR over an alleged double-touch of the ball.

Replays of Madrid's celebrations of the victory appeared to show Rudiger perform a throat-slitting gesture towards the crowd, while Mbappe appeared to grab his crotch.

"A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Daniel Ceballos Fernandez and Vinicius Junior) during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match between Club Atletico de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on 12 March 2025," a UEFA statement read.

"Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course."

If found guilty, the quartet could be handed a ban for Champions League fixtures, potentially putting their involvement in the upcoming quarter-final clash with Arsenal at risk.

However, history would suggest the players would face a fine if found guilty. Cristiano Ronaldo and Atleti boss Diego Simeone both paid 20,000 fines for obsence gestures in 2019 but were free to continue representing their clubs.

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti insisted his side are confident they will avoid any and all punishments for the incidents.

"We believe everything was correct, and we hope UEFA makes a decision, but we trust that everything will end well," Ancelotti said.
