Ajax director Marijn Beuker has confirmed the Eredivisie side's interest in signing Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen.

33-year-old Eriksen, who began his senior career with Ajax, is expected to depart United this summer after struggling for minutes under new head coach Ruben Amorim. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, a decision will need to be made soon.

Eriksen recently confessed he is not expecting a new contract and is already looking towards the next step in his career which is unlikely to keep him in the Premier League.

A return to the Netherlands, which Eriksen himself didn't rule out as an option, could be on the cards as Beuker confirmed to ESPN that the Dane is under consideration from the club's perspective.

"He is one of the players who has performed fantastically with us in the past that we are thinking about," Beuker admitted. "There will be multiple others mentioned in the media.

"Such players are always an option. To look at it, it has to fit into the phase we are in, though, in the salary structure. You also don't want to block youth players coming up. That we are open to thinking about it is clear. Only it has to fit into the overall picture for the future."

Eriksen has stated his willingness to remain in Europe, which rules out a move to Major League Soccer or a golden sunset contract in the Saudi Pro League.

His departure from Old Trafford is expected to be part of a push from United to trim costs and raise funds, with Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof all set to be released when their contracts expire in the summer.

With a new midfielder likely to be signed, United are reported to have reignited their interest in Newcastle's Sean Longstaff, who was linked with a 50m switch to Old Trafford back in 2019.
