AEW Dynamite kicked off 2025 with a move nobody saw comingand almost nobody wanted. Tony Khan swapped out the gritty, adrenaline-pumping Pop by Mikey Rukus for The Pointer Sisters 1982 track Im So Excited as the shows new theme. Fans? Not impressed.
From the moment the song hit the air on the January 1 episode, social media lit up. Why this song? It doesnt fit the tone of Dynamite at all, one fan posted on X. Others accused Khan of letting his personal playlist dictate AEWs vibe. The backlash was fast, loud, and relentless.
And now we knowit wasnt just fans raising eyebrows. According to Sean Ross Sapp on the Fightful Select Q&A Podcast, This was widely warned against in the company. People told Tony it wasnt a good idea and hehe had a vision, man. He had a vision for it.
Yep, even inside AEW, there were serious reservations about pairing an upbeat, feel-good pop song with AEWs typically high-intensity product. But Khan stuck to his guns, and Im So Excited became Dynamites new theme for a hot minute.
That theme has already vanished from Dynamite broadcasts, with this weeks episode quietly switching back to one of the shows older intro montages. No statement, no big announcementjust a silent walk-back. And so far, no word from AEW on whether another theme change is coming, or if the Pointer Sisters experiment has been scrapped for good.
Say what you want about Tony Khan, but the man doesnt back down from a bold (or divisive) decision even when the writings on the walland everyone in the building sees it but him.
