Newcastle United return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Brentford in the Premier League.

The Magpies ended their 70-year wait for major silverware before the March international period as they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium, meaning they can now focus all their attention on securing Champions League football for next season. Newcastle are just two points behind Chelsea in fourth and know that fifth could even be enough to qualify for Europe's premier club competition in 2025/26.

Brentford are still in the hunt for European football of some description themselves but will have their work cut out to secure continental qualification. The Bees are in relatively encouraging form after three wins and a draw from their previous four outings, including their 2-1 comeback win over Bournemouth before the internationals.

Here is 90min's guide to the clash at St James' Park.

Newcastle will be without Anthony Gordon once more as he's injured and serving the final match of his suspension, while Sven Botman, Lewis Hall and Jamaal Lascelles are all unavailable due to fitness issues in the Magpies' backline.

Alexander Isak will lead the line aiming to add to his 19-goal Premier League tally for the season, while Harvey Barnes will be the man tasked with replacing Gordon on the left flank. The usual midfield trio of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali will feature, while Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn will continue in the injury-hit defence.

Brentford welcomed three long-term absentees back into the fold over the international break, with Gustavo Nunes, Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry all earning minutes with the club's under-21s. All three could be part of Wednesday's matchday squad.

Mikkel Damsgaard missed the international break with Denmark through illness and is a doubt against Newcastle, while loanee Michael Kayode could return from injury after resting over the past few weeks.

Igor Thiago, Joshua Dasilva and Fabio Carvalho are all sidelined.

Newcastle vs Brentford score prediction

Recent meetings between the sides have produced an abundance of goals, with 16 across the last three battles - ten of which have come this season. The Bees secured a rare victory over the Magpies earlier this term in the league but were beaten in the Carabao Cup at St James' Park, with little expected to separate the teams on Wednesday.

Having struggled on their travels early in the season, Brentford have turned the corner and have now won their last five away from home. They will be confident heading north but will be greeted by a raucous St James' Park crowd still buzzing from Carabao Cup glory.

Brentford will want to bring Newcastle back down to earth but would gladly accept a draw against their Tyneside adversaries.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-2 Brentford
