Rey Fenix is officially stepping into WWEs spotlight, and hes not wasting any time. WWE has confirmed that the former AEW standout will make his in-ring debut on Friday Night SmackDown, but theyre keeping his opponent under wrapsfor now.
However, the mystery may not last long. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, Fenixs first program in WWE is expected to be with none other than Andrade. By the way, Fenix is going to be feuding with Andrade. I dont know if theyll do it on Friday, said Dave Meltzer. That lines up with recent reports from WrestleVotes, who revealed that three weeks ago, WWE had a backstage segment in the works where Andrade would be told about a new talent coming to SmackDownpresumably Fenix. The segment was pulled before it made it to air.
With the creative direction seemingly locked in, fans could be seeing a lucha-laced feud kick off as soon as this weeks episode.
This debut comes after weeks of rumors and backstage movement. Fightful Espaol, backed by Sean Ross Sapp, reported that Fenix is under contract with WWE. WrestleVotes also noted that he has signed or is close to signing, and that WWE has already begun developing merchandise and creative pitches.
Fenix parted ways with AEW quietly awhile ago. Although AEW had the right to extend his deal due to time missed with injury, they granted his releasereportedly under a non-disparagement clause following vague allegations about inhumane treatment. AEW never publicly addressed the situation.
Now that Fenix is WWE-bound with an in-ring debut confirmed and a feud with Andrade on deck, its clear the company has big plans. But the question remainswill this debut be the beginning of a massive solo run, or will WWE pivot and throw Fenix into the tag scene again?
